Traditional and Local Knowledge Coordination
Traditional and Local Knowledge (TLK) offers an abundance of information and invaluable insights that are critical to informing decision making processes in the Beaufort Sea. As such, under the Beaufort Sea Partnership, the TLK Working Group was created to work towards improving TLK coordination in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.
One example of this is the development of the Inuvialuit TLK Catalogue at the Inuvialuit Joint Secretariat. This catalogue aims to increase the accessibility of existing Inuvialuit TLK studies so that this information is available for use by community members and decision-makers.
TLK was used to help identify Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas and the Marine Protected Areas in the Beaufort Sea Large Ocean Management Area. TLK will continue to be used in making similar planning decisions to ensure successful co-management in the region.
Traditional Knowledge has already been used to help identify Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas in the Beaufort Sea Large Ocean Management Area (LOMA) and will continue to be used in making similar planning decisions.
